Route 66 is the United State's historic highway that was established in 1926, It is over 2,400 miles, and it goes from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, Illinois. The route was used by many who migrated west during the 1900s and it was popularized in songs, TV series and The Grapes of Wrath. My dad and I went on a full Route 66 road trip over 14 days in June of 2019 and made this video to share what the route looked like during that time period and to encourage others to drive this historic road.

Today we share how to travel the USA on a budget so that you can travel the US on a budget. We look at how to save traveling America with budget hotels in America, budget restaurants in America, budget travel in America and the cheapest way to travel USA.

USA Destination guides: https://bit.ly/2FnkEZz

How to travel across the US on a budget:

- Chain hotels - The USA has many budget chain hotels. These are basic and make sure to check reviews on Yelp and Tripadvisor first, but you can save some serious money staying in places like Econolodge, Travelodge, Days in and Super 8.

- Hotels with kitchenettes - When booking a hotel or motel, check if there is a kitchenette. If there is a room or hotel with a kitchenette, then opt for that choice, especially if you are staying somewhere for an extended period of time. This means you can save loads of money cooking food yourself rather than eating out.

- Farmer markets - Heading to farmer markets or ethnic grocery stores can save you money on snacks and food.

- Early Bird - When eating out, either aim to have a big lunch or head to a restaurant before 5. Many places offer an early bird option, where you can save money when eating between 2 - 5pm.

- Coupons - Pick up the local newspaper to find coupons for attractions and restaurants each week. If you plan on visiting a chain restaurant or cafe (such as Starbucks), check for vouchers or gift certificates on Ebay.

- Reward cards - If you travel a lot, why not get a rewards credit card for your favourite hotel chain. Hilton and Marriott have great sign up offer, so you can collect points each time you spend money on the card and then redeem free stays and upgrades worldwide.

- Compare rentals - If you intend on road tripping, make sure you compare prices for a rental car on websites such as rentalcars.com or hotwire.com.

- Turo - Another option if you are looking to rent a car is by using getaround.com or turo.com. This is a similar concept to airbnb but for cars; you can rent a car from owners and this can work out cheaper than renting from a rental company.

- Avoid checked luggage - If you are flying in or out and visiting for a short period, avoid having checked luggage. You can book budget flights to save money but these don’t always include checked luggage.

- Hotel Tonight - This app can be used in the big cities such as New York, LA, Chicago, Miami and Vegas. It offers last minute rooms, particularly great if you are thinking of a weekend away.

- Download a Wifi Map - This map is fantastic at finding available Wifi Spots in your area. These aren’t just Free Wifi Spots too, they have a database of passwords to make your connection reliable and safe.

- Avoid Public Holidays - Hotel and travel prices rise around the 4th July and Labor Day, so avoiding travelling at this time. If you do want to travel at this time, book everything in advance.

- Avoid hostels - Hostels are a great way to save money accommodation everywhere else in the world but not in the US. There aren’t many hostels and most are overpriced. If you are travelling by yourself, you are better off using a budget hotel or look for a bedroom on airbnb.

Shot in Jan 2020. A last romantic view of this beautiful country, travelling across America by train, before things got harder. I am sure things will get better again.

"I would just fly... train travel in the US is terrible... you're not going to enjoy it... have fun getting all your stuff stolen... why are you doing that?"

I'm definitely not the first person to make an Amtrak coast-to-coast video, but judging by some reactions I got along the way, you'd almost think I was. I can't say I wasn't a little worried by how few times we heard "amazing, I would love to do that some day".

But anyway, here it is, we travelled across the USA from New York to LA without flying.

Travelling overland across America from New York to LA is definitely a fun experience that I would recommend, you see so many cool things that you would miss by flying, and you meet a lot of interesting people. Eco-travel is definitely going to take off soon, too. Obviously it's not the cheapest option for backpacking the USA on a budget, but I would say that for the money you spend, the experience is worth it. A ticket for the California Zephyr between Chicago and San Francisco is about $175 - not a cheap thing to buy, but if you're travelling around and looking to make some cool memories, 100% good value.

Of course in the video we get to see all the touristy stuff that people who've never seen the US do, like the Staten Island Ferry, the Smithsonian Museums, San Francisco Pier 39 and Golden Gate Bridge, Monterey Bay Whale Watching, Cloud Gate, Griffith Observatory, etc.

If you’re new to Airbnb, you can use my referral link for up to $50 off your first booking, and it gives us some credit too: https://abnb.me/e/da3GgNOrJdb thanks!

We did fly in to and out of the USA (I mean there's kind of no other option if you do wanna travel), we landed in JFK and left from LAX.

• We got the Greyhound from New York City to Washington DC, which was pretty terrible, and made me start to believe everything I'd read online. But we did get there.

• The Amtrak Capitol Limited from Washington DC to Chicago was so much fun, our first taste of the long-distance train rides and showed us so much cool snowy scenery from the North-Eastern United States. We met some cool people and got to hear a lot of Amish hymns. We sat in the cheap seats, without a bed, and just brought our own food and a duvet. It's not perfect, but it was a cool experience and you'd be surprised how peacefully we slept, definitely nothing like I had been warned online (your things will be stolen, you'll be beaten up, you'll be 8 hours late because of all the passengers getting arrested...)

• The Amtrak California Zephyr in winter was absolutely incredible, and the whole time I couldn't believe how lucky I was. You can see it in the video, just watching the mountains go by, looking out for eagles and elk, and making new friends. This would be worth it just for fun, but it was actually the transport we needed for our journey... if I had just been sat around in an airport instead of doing this, I would be very mad with myself right now. If you have any questions about riding the California Zephyr on a budget, ask me below. All my favourite pictures from the trip are from this day, either of the scenery out the window or of us outside in snowy alpine train stations stretching our legs. You can definitely ride the California Zephyr in the seats, without a room and without a cabin. If you also stop in Salt Lake City, fyi the California Zephyr leaves at 11pm, and the station is NOT open to check in your bags until 10pm... basically it's the only train, so they just open for it. This left us with our bags in SLC for the day. (For the journey between Chicago and SLC, westbound, sit on the left. Bag a table by one of the left-hand windows, thank me later)

•The Amtrak Coast Starlight was another cool journey, we didn't sleep on this because we just did San Francisco to Salinas, and Salinas to Los Angeles. Again we sat in front of the massive windows and watched America go by.

If you're lucky enough to save up, quit and go (if the world goes back to normal), I hope this has inspired your USA train travel on a budget backpacking trip :)

UPDATE: From Sunday 12th June at 12:01 ET, the predeparture test is no longer required. This means they you no longer need to show proof of a negative test or proof of recovery.

I hope I can clarify what is needed to travel to the USA, and what documents were checked where. I used a recovery certificate to enter, but you can take a negative test 1 day before you travel, as explained in the video. To see how to get a recovery certificate you can watch that here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JOHPworQ5I&t=5s
And you can also watch my personal experience using a recovery certificate here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9XKre3dZXo&t=213s

Also, forgot to mention masks are no longer required on flights between the US and UK any more :)

(Also, if you would like to give some extra thanks, you can click the button under the video that says Thanks with a $ in a heart and make a donation. I do this in my spare time so anything is greatly appreciated. Thanks)

【4K】WALK Times Square NEW YORK City USA 4k video Travel vlog

4k Walking in Times Square in New York City. Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center, and neighborhood in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Brightly lit by numerous billboards and advertisements, it stretches from West 42nd to West 47th Streets and is sometimes referred to as "the Crossroads of the World", "the Center of the Universe", "the heart of the Great White Way" and "the heart of the world". One of the world's busiest pedestrian areas, it is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Times Square is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, drawing an estimated 50 million visitors annually. Approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square daily, many of them tourists, while over 460,000 pedestrians walk through Times Square on its busiest days.

Formerly known as Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the then newly erected Times Building, now One Times Square. It is the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop, which began on December 31, 1907, and continues to attract over a million visitors to Times Square every year.

Times Square functions as a town square, but is not geometrically a square; it is closer in shape to a bowtie, with two triangles emanating roughly north and south from 45th Street, where Seventh Avenue intersects Broadway. Broadway runs diagonally, crossing through the horizontal and vertical street grid of Manhattan laid down by the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, and that intersection creates the "bowtie" shape of Times Square.

The southern triangle of Times Square has no specific name, but the northern triangle is officially Duffy Square. It was dedicated in 1937 to World War I chaplain Father Francis P. Duffy of New York City's U.S. 69th Infantry Regiment and is the site of a memorial to him. There is also a statue of composer and entertainer George M. Cohan, and the TKTS ticket booth for Broadway theaters.

This urban walk was a pleasure and everybody. should be able to experience it. It was a perfect day. Manhattan was fun! An awesome walk where to feel city. This is New York 4k as seen by this travel vlogger! Take a virtual walk with us. Let's virtual hike watching this slow tv documentary 4k video.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the #travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this #travelvlog to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! After achieving our new goal of 100 countries before 2020 and all 7 continents, we have no plans to slow down anytime soon, and we are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
